Indian AI startup Sarvam AI has launched a new funding round aiming to raise $300–350 million, which would value the company at $1.5–1.55 billion. The round is expected to close within the next week. The financing features a star-studded lineup of global investors, highlighting strong international confidence in India's AI potential. Lead investor Bessemer Venture Partners is anticipated to anchor the round, with tech giants Amazon and Nvidia, as well as Saudi Aramco's Prosperity7 Ventures, also participating or expressing interest. Founded in 2023, Sarvam AI has carved out a niche by focusing on India's specific market needs. The company has already released two large language models with 30 billion and 105 billion parameters, both trained exclusively on Indian language data. Its core strategy involves developing a voice-first AI system supporting 22 Indian languages, addressing the country's fragmented linguistic landscape. Furthermore, Sarvam is working on AI systems with agentic capabilities for enterprise automation. The rapid rise of Sarvam AI signals a shift in the AI landscape, where "local champions" built on specific language data and vertical applications are gaining traction alongside general-purpose models. For investors like Nvidia and Amazon, backing Sarvam represents a strategic move to secure a foothold in South Asia's burgeoning AI ecosystem. With this significant capital infusion, Sarvam AI is poised to reshape the competitive landscape for multilingual AI in South Asia and beyond. The investment accelerates India's transition from an AI follower to a key player in the global race, fueled by a fusion of computing power and localized data.
